Baguazhang, also spelled Pakuachang, is an internal Chinese martial art based on the theory of the I-Ching and the eight trigrams of yin and yang. Known for its circular, evasive footwork, it was once a secret art taught primarily to the Emperor's bodyguards. Our group practices Yin Style Baguazhang, as taught by He Jinbao. Each trigram in Yin Style Baguazhang represents an animal and a corresponding martial art system. Classes currently focus on the Lion system.
Those interested in learning Yin Style Baguazhang can purchase instructional videos from
the Association for Traditional Studies.
These feature the current grandmaster He Jinbao, as well as his late teacher Dr. Xie Peiqi, demonstrating techniques and exercises. Videos exist only for the Lion, Bear, Dragon, and Phoenix systems. The trigrams and their corresponding animal systems are listed below.
